Neurofeedback Training is a process of using auditory,
visual, proprioceptive, and other external stimuli to support a
client in shifting/balancing their brainwave activity and cross
hemisphere communication into more normative patterns. Neurofeedback
may support balance of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and symptom
reduction or enhanced performance. This non-invasive process has
been used to alleviate a variety of conditions and symptoms including
epilepsy, ADHD, sleep issues, depression, anxiety, chronic pain,
fatigue, fibromyalgia, brain injury, PTSD, and addictions.
Generally, long term results can be attained in as
few as 10 or as many as 70 sessions. The factors which affect the
results attained, speed of results, and longevity of results are:
the plasticity of the mind, neuroreceptor health, the willingness
to be successful (including mental blocks), and the training goals.
Training sessions are offered in 2 week intensives that include
20 sessions (2 sessions per day). Other training periods are available
depending on your desired training goals and any specific limitations
you may have. Like physical exercise, Neurofeedback Training generally
needs to be done no less that three times per week in order to be
effective, though there are exceptions to that guideline.
- Before training commences, you will be asked
to complete a confidential personal history form. Because the
purpose of neurofeedback is to balance the CNS and reduce symptoms
or enhance performance, it is necessary to know about any trauma
or learning/development issues before training begins. In particular,
your personal goals for training must be clear.
- Depending on your personal history, I may suggest
that you consult with a licensed naturopathic doctor regarding
formulations that will make the training more successful and lasting.
It is not necessary to do this, but may affect the longevity of
the training results if neuro receptors do not have the building
blocks necessary to operate optimally.
- In our first session, an assessment will be performed
using EEG or QEEG equipment. This assessment, in conjunction with
the personal history form and your individual goals, plays an
important role in determining the most appropriate support protocol.
Time permitting, and if further review of the assessment results
is not necessary, training may begin during this first session.
- During the training, you will watch a movie. You
may bring your own DVD as long as it is supportive of training.
The feedback provided in this office uses video, audio, and/or
tactile feedback equipment (a vibrating pillow). When your brainwave
activity falls outside of the training range, the picture will
get smaller, the sound will become quieter, and vibration will
decrease. You may stop the training at any time by removing the
headphones and looking away from the monitor.
NOTE: During training and assessment, EEG sensors
are placed on your head to sense electrical impulses. These electrical
impulses are translated by software into information about brainwave
activity. For this reason, it is important to remain still (both
the body and face) during training and assessment, as movement will
affect the results. To apply the leads, an abrasive pad and gel
will be used to rub the skin, followed by connection of the sensors
using a conductive gel. Plan on washing your hair after the assessment.
Other devices may be used to provide feedback related to temperature,
pulse, muscle tension and other information about your physical
state to assist you in relaxing your body. Meditation or breathing
techniques may also be taught for the same purpose.
